Oral Contrast for Radiation Therapy Planning

You will be receiving oral contrast today as part of your radiation therapy planning. The contrast helps your doctor clearly see your digestive organs and ensures your treatment is planned as accurately as possible.

Please notify your doctor or nurse if you have a bowel obstruction, difficulty swallowing or an allergy to CT contrast or barium.

Possible Side Effects

Most patients tolerate oral contrast well. However, some mild and temporary side effects can occur, such as:

  • Upset stomach or mild nausea

  • Loose stools, diarrhea, or constipation

  • Bloating or mild abdominal discomfort

If you experience severe pain, vomiting, allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing), or any symptoms that concern you, please contact our office right away or seek emergency care.

After Your Appointment

  • Drink plenty of water over the next 24 hours. This helps flush the contrast media from your system.

  • You may return to your normal diet unless instructed otherwise by your care team.
